In immediate perception, we never really perceive a throng of sensations, e.g. tones and noises. Rather, we hear the storm whistling in the chimney, the three motored plane, the Mercedes which is immediately different from the Volkswagen. Much closer to us than any sensation are the things themselves. In the house we hear the door slam - never acoustic sensations or mere noises. To hear a bare sound we must listen away from the things, direct our ears from them, listen abstractly.
Martin Heidegger, ‘On The Origin of The Work of Art’
Heidegger may have had a point when it comes to our everyday experience of sounds - we rarely hear the sounds themselves - more often than not, what we hear is their meaning, the significance they hold for us in terms of practical engagement with the world. We are not attuned to the intracacies of the aural texture of our enivronment, we hear things only insofar as they are of instrumental use for us.
However, music presents a special case. When we hear music, we are no longer hearing the sounds in light of our needs, but, when we truly listen, we hear the pure sensation, the very fabric of noise, with all its resonant landscapes - the bare sound itself.
